The power and interest grid helps to categorize stakeholders in termsof interest and power in the project. The tool helps in theprioritization of stakeholders by establishing relationships andconflicting interests (Ghose, 2013). A stakeholder interest and powergrid could be applied during a real life project audit. If theproject costs increase beyond established estimates, the projectfinancier may demand more frequent updates on expenditure. If thesponsor had been previously placed in the Keep Informed quadrant,changed circumstances would necessitate their movement to the ManageClosely quadrant.
In other instances, a particular aspect such as machinery performancemay lag. Consequently, the project manager would need to pay moreattention to machinery. The project technician usually has the mostinterest and power to influence the functionality of machinery.Inevitably, the technician’s power and influence in ensuring thesuccess of the project would increase. Hence, it would be proper toplace the technician in the Manage Closely quadrant.
As the project manager, my next steps would revolve around cateringto the specifications of the persons in the Manage Closely quadrant.For example, the project sponsor would be pleased if variable costswere reduced. Therefore, I would implement a broad variety ofcost-cutting measures aimed at limiting wastage. Supplementaryworkers would also be laid off as job tasks are either combined orsimplified. Lowering costs would convince the project sponsor tocontinue financing the project’s activities. Also, it is importantto consider the project technician’s input in the form ofcorrections and recommendations. The machinery used to accomplishproject activities need to be properly maintained. In this regard,the technician’s suggestions need to be implemented to ensureproject success.
