In the long course of the history of the development of the society, the issues of gender differences and equality have been a dominant factor dividing the views and idealism of the people. Ever since the dawn of the foundation of the social forces and institution in the organization that governs the people’s community and their interactional patterns, gender roles and responsibilities are already viewed to be unequal and dominated by the masculine side. However, during the primitive times, opinions regarding this issue are still submissive and silent towards the public knowledge particularly in the women’s side.
Then, the period of the 19th century came and the social movements regarding this issue started to gain the efforts and attention of the society. The historical period of 19th century is mainly dominated by the social movements promoting the equal legal and social views of the society towards the rights of the women. Many feminist campaigns have been launched as led by famous female suffragist and women’s rights advocates such as Susan B. Anthony, Carrie Chapman Catt, Margaret Sanger, Emma Goldman, and others to gather and summed up the voice of the women in their plight for equal rights and freedom.
This has led to the redevelopment of the social structure of the people’s community regarding their social roles, responsibilities, and rights particularly those that are related to gender. Indeed, the line that stratified the society according to their gender nature has deteriorated causing the major changes to the society of the present. In the present, the organization and structure of the society particularly that of related to the gender issue has already manifested many changes to the views and perspective of the people. One common manifestation of these changes in the modern society is the view regarding gender roles.
Traditionally, society has levied the responsibility of providing financial resources for the family to the male gender. Because of this, the corporate and secular employment aspect of the society have been established in and were dominated by men because mainly of the said gender role. However, now in the present, modern needs and tighter competition have caused the involvement of the women to the aspect of the employment world causing the significant transformation of this social structure to incorporate the female side to the nature of the said aspect.
This means that the legal rules and guidelines of the corporate and employment world must be reestablished and transform to serve and protect both genders. In addition, the tradition views and principles of the employment aspect, which is based on the nature of men, must be abolished and be replaced by a norm that is unbiased and equal to all gender. This means that most of the structures and organization in the society must be transform and redevelop to incorporate the rights and responsibilities of both the male and female gender that is now equally accepted in each social fields.
But still, it can be argued that the systems and structures of the modern society regarding the gender issue is still not yet that open to the democracy and liberalism of their rights. This is mainly because cases and incidences of harassment and women’s right violation are still being reported in the almost every aspect of the social community. This proves that the modern society is still in the verge and is continuously struggling to transform its systems and views to incorporate the women’s side into their basic ideology and nature.
Positive results have already been achieved such as the laws and legal standards that promotes and protect the women’s right in the society and in almost all of its fields and aspect. What needs to be changed and transformed is the mentality and perspective of the people towards this issue enabling them to realize that every human beings, regardless of their gender, are created with equal rights and dignity in this society thus, none has the right to delimit and oppress the freedom of the others mainly because of their gender.
