Many people know the basic rules of writing but they do not know how to begin. I realized that once people find their weakest point in writing, they will overcome their fear and difficulty. It is essential to identify any difficulty they encounter in writing for them to improve on their writing skills. A lot of things have changed in my writing skills from August 27 to December 3. I am now comfortable with idioms, which until recently, has been my weakest point. I was also able to identify central idea and theses of paragraphs.
This in turn helped me write essays easily. At first, I was worried that I will not be able to learn idioms. I found out that most people who speak English do not often use idioms in their daily conversations. When I learned about that, I realized that I was not alone, I too find it difficult to use idioms in daily conversations. With the guidance of my professor, practical exercises, and numerous examples, I was able to use them in sentences. Soon enough, I am engaging myself in conversation with someone using the idioms that I’ve learned.
I was one of the many people who find it difficult to write sentences that make up paragraphs. It wasn’t a case of not having something to say. It was more of not knowing how to say it. I often fall into a trap of filling up paragraphs with sentences that have entirely different ideas. My paragraphs become hard to understand and my thoughts become hard to grasp. This is the reason why most people don’t know how to write effective essays. In writing paragraphs, central idea and theses are the most important. Central ideas and theses are the core of paragraphs.
It helps the reader understand what the writer is trying to say. Knowledge on how to identify these makes it easier for me to write my own paragraphs. Once I have identified the central idea, writing sentences become easier and my paragraphs become coherent. I learned that starting an essay with short paragraphs help me to write easier. Before, I struggle to write long paragraphs, putting every idea that comes to mind in a single paragraph. This makes my paragraphs cluttered and difficult to understand. I now learned to break my long paragraphs into short ones.
The ideas that I put in short paragraphs are easier to write about and I hope, for the reader, an essay that is easy to understand. Lastly, I am glad that I’ve taken up this course. My English has improved and it became easy for me to converse and make friends. I also found a new joy in writing. I am very grateful to my professor for her guidance and patience.
