ArtMimicry / Parody
Background:What is art mimicry?
Webegin by examining the Neoclassical painting by Jacques-Louis Davidtitled MadameRécamierand painted in 1800(David & Johnson, 2006). (One version of what may be David`s most famous painting, TheOath of the Horatii, can be seen the Toledo Museum of Art.)(Chambers, 2010).Then compare it to René Magritte`s PerspectiveI: David`s Madame Récamier, painted in 1950 in the Surrealist style (David& Johnson, 2006). Consider
Madame Récamier (David) (David & Johnson, 2006). | Perspective I (Magritte) (David & Johnson, 2006). |
Whatthe intention of David`s original was, then what Magritte meant bymimicking it in his painting (Galenson,2008). Here,what we see is one example of "high art" mimicking– evenmocking — another example of "high art."
Nextsee what happens when the artist doing the mimicking becomes theobject of mimicry. Compare Magritte`s famous painting, TheBlank Cheque(from 1965), at left, with the illustration (uncredited, but paintedby the Pop Artist Romero Britto) from a late 1990`s magazineadvertisement for Grand Marnier liqueur (at right)(Charnley& Azevedo, 2010). Thisis a bit different. This time we see an example of "high art"being mimicked in popular culture.

Pop culture makes frequent use of mimicry or "high culture" art. Here is an example of a reference to the stark scene in Edward Hopper`s Nighthawks (1942) in an image featuring characters from the television show The Simpsons (Matt Groening) | ||
Nighthawks (Hopper) (Cowan, 2007). | "Simpsons Nighthawks" (Groening) (Cowan, 2007). |
Tounderstand an art mimicry and how well it works, we have to askseveral questions:
Who are the artists (the original and the mimicker)?
Who is the audience for each artist (again, for both artists)?
What is being communicated, and how well (yes, yet again, for both artists)?
