Question3: Dogon art and the tourist trade

Thefact that more and more Dogon now perform their art so as to earn anincome from the tourists has changed the way in which their art ismade and understood. This in the long run, is quite a bad thing. Thisis because the people viewing the art could fail to appreciate theculture of the Dogon as portrayed in the art that they perform. Thisis because such people will feel that the Dogon have just perfectedthe art so as to be able to earn a living from it, rather than astheir way of life (University of Iowa, 2009). Also, thecommercialization of the art leads to as the serious problem ofmaking the Dogon people lack the enthusiasm to perform the art fromtheir hearts, but rather, just seek to do it because they hope toearn some money from it. The resultant effect of such a situation isthat it reduces the worth of the art.
