Benefits:comes with variety, low maintenance cost, affordable, and durable
Insulatedvinyl siding is required to meet the International Codes (I-Codes),which are adopted by every state in the US. The codes require thatinsulated vinyl siding is certified to ASTM standards. The standardsensure that the product is well manufactured, and then properlyinstalled. The four I-codes, often associated with insulated vinylsiding are the International Residential Code (IRC), InternationalBuilding Code (IBC), International Energy Conservation Code (EnergyCode) and the International Wildland-Urban Interface Code (IWUIC).Collectively, the four I-codes require that insulated vinyl siding iscertified and labeled in accordance with ASTM standards. Forinstance, the IRC code requires that insulated vinyl siding isinstalled 16 inches on center using roofing nails (however, variations are allowed). The codes also dictate the installationrequirements of insulated vinyl siding. The Energy Code focuses onthe product’s ability to conserve energy (Dobson, 2014).
VinylSiding is particularly popular in the US because of its low cost, uniform appearance and maintenance-free durability (Marshall, 2008).According to the Vinyl Siding Institute (VSI), the product protectsthe house against extreme weather events. Also, certified insulatedvinyl siding is durable the color does not fade, it does not rot anddecay, and it is energy efficient. VSI also attributes the product`spopularity to the fact that manufacturers in the US offer lifelongwarranties, of at least 50 years for their product. Amongprofessionals and construction companies, insulated vinyl siding isconsidered to be a low cost and attractive option. The expectedreturn on investment is often well over 50 percent (Bonoma, 1984).

Shortcomings:Major limitations of insulated vinyl siding are that there are moreexpensive than standard vinyl siding. Insulated vinyl siding is moreenergy efficient than vinyl siding, hence the added cost. Insulatedvinyl siding may contribute to obtaining LEED credits as a buildingproduct that does not require additional finish resources. Theproduct is termite resistant, energy efficient and creates a betterthermal building envelope. Overall, insulated vinyl siding providesbetter environmental performance as compared to other exteriorcladding, like brick and stucco.
