PEDAGOGY 2
The learning objective involves teaching second bilingual graders onhow to know the value of coins. It is anticipated that by the end ofthe topic all the students will have knowledge on the different coinswe use. At the end of the session, students should be able toidentify and describe the different coins and their value in cents.
Different tasks will be used to reveal if students have achieved thelearning objective. The first task involves the teacher givingstudents play coins and ensuring that each coin is properly labeled. This includes the different types of coins, penny, dime, nickel andquarter. Students will be taught on the difference in the color, symbol, size and appearance of every coin. The teacher will use acounting game to assess if students are able to tell apart thedifferent types of coins. The game involves the teacher describing acoin and asking the students to identify it. Once all the studentseffectively identify the coins, the game advances requiring studentsto show coin combinations, for example “show me ten cents by usingsix coins.” If every student is able to identify and make propercoin combinations, it implies that the learning objective has beenachieved. The second task involves the teacher setting up a store inthe classroom and using stickers to label prices on differentclassroom items. Students will role play in turns acting as buyers ofthe labeling items. If every student is able to make purchases usingthe right amount of coins, it demonstrates that the learningobjective has been achieved.
Identifying the value of coins can be used as a learning toolbecause students practice how to add and subtract numbers as they buythe different items during role play.
To ensure the reliability and validity of the assessment, theteacher will give students real coins during the role play. Itensures that they practice with real money. The teacher will act asthe cashier, which makes it possible to identify students thatcorrectly identify the coins they use to buy items.
